Area schools to participate in earthquake drill

A handful of area schools have signed up to participate in the Tuesday, Feb. 7, earthquake drill across nine states.

Fields tended to at Veterans Sports Complex

Last year was a struggle out at Veterans Field for the Hannibal Pirates as heavy rains left standing water in the outfield and along the warning track.
But after some maintenance, that may not be an issue this season.

HHS to host financial aid meeting

Parents and high school students are invited to a financial aid meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at the Hannibal High School library.

 

HLGU early enrollment meeting planned

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, Hannibal High School will host an informational meeting in the library about the Early Enrollment Program at Hannibal-LaGrange University.

Teens learn about health, win prizes

The hundreds of teens at the 16th annual Teen Health Fair Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center in Hannibal, Mo., were busy learning good health habits while also winning prizes.

 

A scrap of history: ‘Something about the oldest inhabitant of Hannibal’

Jacob M. Lowe, a slave, accompanied Moses Bates on a surveying expedition to Northeast Missouri,  the present site of Hannibal, in 1818. Upon arrival, they found only a wilderness without sign of civilization. Indians were numerous but peaceable and only upon one occasion, was there ever blood shed in Marion County between the Indians and the whites.

Gardening program set in Monroe City

Cecelia Obert, Master Gardener from Hannibal, will present a gardening program on saving seeds, heirloom seeds and square-foot gardening at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, at the Monroe City R-1 Schools.

Black history program planned

The adult choir of Park Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Palmyra will host its annual Soul Food Dinner and Black History Program from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Allen makes dean’s list

Tyler W. Allen of Hannibal was recently named to the dean’s list for the 2011 fall semester at William Jewell College in Kansas City.

Missouri S&T awards degrees

More than 450 candidates received degrees from Missouri University of Science and Technology during a commencement ceremony held Dec. 19 in the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building on campus.
