In 1904, a $110,000 high school was built on the northeast corner of Eleventh and Broadway. The office of the superintendent, a conference room for the school board and a fireproof vault for the school records were on the first floor. CONTRIBUTED
The cornerstone for Hannibal's first hospital was laid on June 19, 1902. The cost of the building was $32,000. Levering Hospital opened on Feb. 4, 1903, with a staff of 12 doctors. CONTRIBUTED
The Cruikshank Mansion was built by J.J. Cruikshank at the turn of the turn of the 20th Century. $225,000 was spent building and furnishing the mansion. CONTRIBUTED
As part of the 100th anniversary celebration marking Mark Twain's birth, a light house was constructed atop Cardiff Hill. The unusual inland lighthouse stood 150 feet above the river, and was completed in December 1934. President light the beacon by turning a switch in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 12, 1935. In 1913, the Sisters of St. Francis, a Catholic order, came to Hannibal to investigate the need for establishing a hospital. Levering was the only hospital in town and was crowded. W.J.A. Meyer provided property on Broadway, between Virginia and Magnolia for the building site. The location had been used by Scott Meyer, son of W.J.A. Meyer for a small dairy and pasture. The new hospital was dedicated on July 8, 1915. CONTRIBUTED
The Mark Twain Home, gifted to the city Hannibal by Mr. and Mrs. George Mahan, was dedicated in a ceremony on May 15, 1912. Mrs. Tabetha Greening of Palmyra, a cousin of Mark Twain, was present. CONTRIBUTED
St. Elizabeth's Hospital built a million-dollar addition in 1955. When the addition was completed in 1956, the hospital had a 170-bed capacity. CONTRIBUTED
Union Depot, jointly owned by the Burlington, Wabash and the Katy, was completed in 1882. It was a three-story structure with a central skylight. The upper floors were open in the center, with railings around the open corridors. CONTRIBUTED
Hannibal-LaGrange College celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1958. The graduating class numbered 99 with Martha Jane Dillinger as valedictorian. CONTRIBUTED
Marion County residents passed a special bond election authorizing that $100,000 be spent to build two court houses - one in Hannibal and the other in Palmyra. Hannibal's courthouse was completed on July 12, 1901. At the right of this court house photo is Smith Funeral Home. CONTRIBUTED
