Hannibal, MO —

One never knows what will turn up at the city of Hannibal’s auction of surplus items. If you don’t believe it, just ask Chuck Anderson, who is helping organize this year’s event.
“We have quite an assortment,” said Anderson, assistant to the city engineer, who has helped with the past five or six city auctions. “There’s a lot of library books that we really weren’t aware were coming. There are computers that actually work, some really nice ones. There are mowers and vehicles like a flusher truck, a pickup truck and a 1-ton flatbed truck.”
One of the auction’s most unusual items is the flusher truck.
“We don’t have too many of those in the auction,” said Anderson with a chuckle. “I think it dates back to 1971. I remember as a kid seeing that thing going around town so it’s kind of a unique thing. I told them I’m going to buy it and put it in the (July 4th) parade.”
Among the most plentiful items will be computers.
“There’s always a lot of computer stuff,” said Anderson. “I think people are going to get more value for their money this year. The majority are complete units with keyboards, monitors and towers.”
This year’s event will take place at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center. The doors will open at 8 a.m. The auction will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Anderson doesn’t believe the forecast of another hot day will scare people away.
“That’s why we decided on the morning. Maybe we should have done it a little earlier, but at 9:30 we’ll still get a crowd,” he said. “Here in the armory it’s kind of cool with those (overhead) fans going. I think people will be somewhat comfortable.”
In addition to the city’s items, the Homestore and Smith Central Plumbing will also be participating in the auction.
“That helps draw a crowd, too,” said Anderson. “There will be quite a few folks here.”
