Kenneth Rieffer is doing his part to heat up the economy.
The owner of Riverside Smoke House & Grill in Canton has added three workers in the last year.
While the jobless rate remains high, the numbers for July dropped a bit in five of seven Northeast Missouri counties.
In the last year, most counties saw unemployment decreases of one percent or less, but there have been glimmers of hope. Lewis and Lincoln counties each have seen a drop of slightly more than two percent.
Rieffer is encouraged because revenues at his restaurant have increased.
“We’ve got quite a niche here,” he said. We’re pulling a lot of (customers) from other communities and from across the river.”
“I do think there are jobs out there,” said Kerry Klump of the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce. “We just hope people don’t lose hope completely. There are options.”
The jobless rate for Marion County dipped one percent when comparing July 2010 to July 2009.
Terry Sampson of the Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce the numbers offer “a little bit of a mixed bag,” but added that they’re heading in the right direction.
“We’ve faired fairly well,” Sampson said. “Anytime there’s more people working, it’s good for the entire area.”
For July 2010, unemployment dropped slightly in five of seven Northeast Missouri counties.
Rates were 7.9 percent in Lewis, 10.4 percent in Lincoln, 8.7 percent in Marion, 12.3 percent in Monroe, 8.5 percent in Pike, 7.3 percent in Ralls and 8.1 percent in Shelby.
By comparison, rates for June were 8.1 percent in Lewis, 10.6 percent in Lincoln, 8.8 percent in Marion, 11.9 percent in Monroe, 8.8 percent in Pike, 7.3 percent in Ralls and 8.5 percent in Shelby.
The statewide rate for July was 9.2 percent, up slightly from June’s 9.1 percent. The rate in Illinois dropped a tenth of a percent between June and July, while the national figure was unchanged at 9.5 percent.
