“Sports and Active Recreation” is the theme of this year’s photo show at the Canton Area Arts Council Gallery, 309 Lewis St. Compiled from the work of photojournalists at the Canton Press-News Journal, the show opens Friday, July 10, with a public reception at 6:30 p.m. The show will continue during weekend hours through July 25 with no admission charge.
“With Canton R-V having had two state top-four appearances this past school year - third place in softball and second place in basketball - the timing seemed right for a sports-related photo show,” said Press-News Journal editor/publisher Dan Steinbeck. But while the show features pictures from Canton’s state game appearances as well as coverage of the Highland teams in three sports, it will also include a look at a variety of minor and quasi sports moments.
“We took the liberty of expanding the definition of sports, calling it ‘active recreation,’” explained Steinbeck. “We run the gamut of firearm sports to rodeo to demolition derby to children’s games, and a host of activities in between, from all times of the year. We show a lot of people at play.”
“Sports and Active Recreation” marks the fourth year the Press-News Journal has been offered the opportunity to present a photo show for the Canton Area Arts Council. “This is the largest of the shows we’ve presented,” said Steinbeck. “We should have over 150 photographs in the show.”
Press-News Journal photojournalists have won awards and prizes for both artistry and impact in their work for several years. Most of the photos chosen for “Sports and Active Recreation” date from the past five years, though there are a few vintage photos as well.
