Three hours of country music filled the air at the Hannibal High School auditorium Thursday night, where a nearly full house saw some 20 awards presented to the operators of country music shows - both past and present - in the Hannibal area.
Among those honored was Bob Vanderbeck of Salt River Opry. He also was honored for his Missouri’s Pure Country Music & Bluegrass Hall of Fame.
George Roberson, who starred in this First Annual Classic Big Country Music & Awards Show, presented awards to many musicians who also sang during the show, such as Donnie Roberts, honored for his Bevier Nashville Shows.
Joe and Gloria Reeves, honored for their Injun Joe Opry, also performed several songs, both together and with other musicians, who called on their friends to join them on stage. One highlight was Joe Reeves on banjo as the stage band played “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.”
Marty and Betty (Parsons) Miller pleased the crowd with several numbers before receiving their award for the Gospel Shed. Her presentation of “I Have Never Walked Alone” was well-received.
Also honored were Jerry Calvin for Wagon Wheel Opry; Sally Smith for Cannon Dam Opry; Bill Lear for Black Diamond Jubilee; Bobbie Abel for the Ridge Runner Jamboree; Tony Gilliland and Floyd Gilliland for Mark Twain Country Music Show; O.C. Latta and Ivan Jennings for Mark Twain Opry; Billy Dee and Letha Perkins for Kinfolks Country Opry; Donnie Tallman for River City Opry; and Adelaide “Grandma” Minor for Grandma’s County Music Show.
Roberson announced an award for his sister, Debbie White for outstanding achievement in country music.
Carl Leroy “Pete” Morgan was honored as a country music promoter, and Mike Marx as a Hollywood promoter.
A surprise award was given to Roberson, after he had presented the other awards.
Both country classics like “Old Lonesome Me” and “Crazy Arms,” were heard, along with some original music by the performers themselves. Chuck Munson sang Roberson’s song, “This Is a Miracle,” which he wrote for a wedding. Sheila Harrison sang “Pass Me By.”
Some well-known musicians were called from the audience to sing, including Bill Clifton, Nick Long and Mary Shuck.
Members of the band playing on stage all evening were Roberson, Marty and Betty Miller, Bill Cornelius, Glenn Cornelius, Tommy Williams, Sam Branstetter and Virgil Watts.
