HANNIBAL | Steppin' Back, the Hannibal band that traditionally opens and closes the seasonal Music Under the Stars concerts, is again scheduled twice in this year's concert dates. The band plays '60s, '70s and '80s rock and roll.
The free concerts will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, and continue weekly until Aug. 27, at the Mark Twain Boyhood Home mall at 206 Hill St., where local residents bring lawn chairs to fill the mall area and the adjacent Boyhood Home garden.
The concerts are sponsored by the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, where Melissa Cummins, the marketing and community relations manager, provided the concert schedule through the end of August.
“We have a wonderful lineup of bands this year,” Cummins said. “The artists are very excited for the opportunity to come.”
She explained how the concerts will be planned differently this year under the COVID-19 pandemic rules. “We will have guidelines for the audience to maintain social distancing. Small groups or families will be together but are asked to sit six feet from other groups.”
To provide more room for distancing, Cummins said, barricades from the city will close the mall area to vehicular traffic on Hill Street from North Main to North Third Street. This one-block area will be closed to traffic from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on each concert date.
Also, “We want to make sure people will be safe on sidewalks on both sides,” Cummins said, “so sidewalks will be kept clear.”
No decision has been made about food vendors, Cummins said, subject to approval of the health department.
“At this point they are not allowing it, but they might later.” If so, “there are a lot of opportunities for organizations to be a food vendor. We have several booked but a lot of openings.”
If vendors are not allowed, Cummins said Hannibal has other food available in the downtown area.
One difference in the concert schedule is there is no location for a rained-out concert, with the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center closed all summer.
