    Sept. 1, 1914: The last known passenger pigeon, a female named Martha, dies at the Cincinnati Zoo. The species was once the most abundant bird in the world, and accounted for more than a quarter of all birds in North America.

    14: The number of hours it took one exceptionally large flock of passenger pigeons to pass observers in southern Ontario in 1866.
