The Hannibal softball team opened its season with a win Monday night as the Lady Pirates blasted Mexico 17-4 in the season opener between the two North Central Missouri Conference rivals.
“I was very impressed with how they didn’t let down,” Hannibal coach Kendra Murphy said. “They came out scoring eight runs in the first, but kept adding on after that.”
Even though Murphy was pleased with the team’s offense, she was more pleased with the defense the Lady Pirates provided.
“They played solid defense, only having two errors both of which were on hard hit balls,” Murphy said. “I couldn’t be more proud of their performance. They have set the bar for the rest of the season and have shown everyone that they can do it.”
While not every player got a hit, evey member of the Lady Pirates’ starting lineup contributed to the win.
The Lady Pirates pounded out 15 hits and drew eight walks. Olivia Pfeifer, Samantha Zielinski, and Rachel Halterman each had three base hits. Pfeifer and Zielinski each went 3-for-5 while Halterman was 3-for-4. Haley Bautch, Gabby Ewert, Caryn Meyer, and Echo Brothers all had one hit apiece.
Kaitlyn Tallman was the only batter not to collect a base hit, but she did score two runs and drive in a run.
Halterman (1-0) pitched a complete game, giving up just four hits while scattering seven walks. She also struck out two over her seven innings of work.
In junior varsity action, the JV Lady Pirates beat  Mexico’s JV squad 12-1 with Desarae Garcia getting the win.
Hannibal (1-0) will host Boonville on Thursday in the Lady Pirates home opener at Veterans Field Sports Park. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
