The Hannibal girls’ tennis team had its start to the season delayed by 90 minutes because of excessive heat, but the delay didn’t have any effect in the outcome as the Lady Pirates beat North Central Missouri Conference foe Fulton 8-1.
Fulton arrived in Hannibal having only enough players eligible to start the season to play five singles and two doubles matches, thus giving Hannibal two free points via forfeits. But the Lady Pirates were more than ready to score point on their own.
Playing in the No. 2 singles, Mackenzie Lane beat her opponent 8-5 while Alexis Houser won the No. 3 singles match 8-4. Haley Yarrington was victorious in the No. 4 singles 8-2 and Shelby Heibel shutout her Lady Hornet counterpart in the No. 5 singles 8-0.
In doubles action, Caitlyn Bueler and Bailey Heibel teamed up for a 6-0 win while Houser and Lane won the No. 2 doubles match 6-1.
Hannibal (1-0) will play on its home court again tomorrow when the Lady Pirates host another NCMC rival, Kirksville, in a 4 p.m. start.
