  • The more than 400 men, women and children who participated in the final Mississippi River Run across the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge at Hannibal ignored the early-morning heat on Saturday, Aug. 23, as they ran or walked across the river and through part of Hannibal. “I was surprised by the number of people we had come out in this kind of heat,” said Ginny Webb, director of marketing with the sponsoring Hannibal Clinic Health Services. “We were hoping for a much cooler day, but we were hit by a hot day. We were happy to see this many people come out for the community initiative this money will go to support.” A fund-raiser for the Hannibal Clinic Health Services, this was the ninth and final river run scheduled across the Mississippi. Webb explained why this annual event will not continue. “The federal highway administration is asking for runs like this to not happen on interstate highways anymore,” she said. “So in order to ensure the safety of our runners, we needed to make this the last year. “This is my fourth year as race director, and it is bittersweet to see it end, but I understand why it has to end,” Webb said. The people met at the Y Men’s Pavilion on Hill Street in downtown Hannibal for a ride to the Illinois side of the bridge. After crossing the bridge, those doing the 10K run continued on Harrison Hill and through Riverview Park before returning to the pavilion. The people doing the 5K run/walk - which Webb said were the majority of participants – crossed the bridge, then went east on Mark Twain Avenue to the finish line at the Y Men’s Pavilion.
