  • A Mass of Christian burial for Mary Elizabeth Whelan, 92, of Perry, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at St. William Catholic Church, Perry, with Father John Henderson and Father Al Allen (cousin of the deceased) officiating. Burial will be at St. Paul Cemetery, rural Center. After the funeral luncheon, a video tribute will follow at 1 p.m. at the church, and all are invited to attend.

Burial will be at St. Paul Cemetery, rural Center. After the funeral luncheon, a video tribute will follow at 1 p.m. at the church, and all are invited to attend.
       Rosary services will be held Monday at 4:30 p.m. with visitation following from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. William Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Bienhoff Funeral Home.
       Mrs. Whelan passed away at 6:47 a.m. August 16, 2014, at University Hospital in Columbia.
       She was born November 26, 1921, in Ralls County, the daughter of the late Walter B. and Julia H. Young Thomas.
       She was united in marriage on December 28, 1940, to Douglas J. Whelan at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Indian Creek, and he preceded her in death December 15, 1992.
       Survivors include 12 children, Virginia (Donald) Cruise of York, Penn., Rose Woodhurst and Jane (Steve) Hickman, all of Perry, Ruth Whelan of Nashville, Tenn., Kenny (Ronda) Whelan of Mexico, Gerald (Morgan) Whelan, Steven (Marsha) Whelan, Dan (Shari) Whelan and Debbie (Eddie) Morawitz, all of Hannibal, Mike (Sheila) Whelan of Douglasville, Ga., Brent (Dawn) Whelan of Jefferson City, and David (Mark White) of Columbia; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Whelan of Perry;  one sister, Joyce Alcorn of Monroe City; one brother, Raymond (Jeannie) Thomas of Quincy, Ill.; 24 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
       She was preceded in death by one son, J.D. Whelan; one son-in-law, Neil Woodhurst; two brothers Donald and Robert Thomas; two sisters, Marie Youngblood and Lucy Helen Jakes; and one grandson, Douglas E. Whelan.
       Mrs. Whelan and her husband lived in the Perry area since the late 1940s and were active members of St. William's Catholic Church. She was a life-long homemaker, baby sitter and member of St. William's Altar Society. She touched the lives of multiple generations of young children during her 40 years of baby sitting. She enjoyed cooking, being a substitute grandmother at the former Perry Elementary School and serving lunch to children at the Perry Christian Academy.
       Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul Cemetery, Center, Mo. 63436.
       Pallbearers, honorary pallbearers  and altar servers will be her grandsons.
