  • The majority of the nearly 90 superheroes in the second annual Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Superhero 5K Fun Run arrived in costume.
The Aug. 9 run through Riverview Park in Hannibal, Mo., raised funds for CASA, a Douglass Community Services (DCS) program that provides volunteers for children who have been removed from their homes.
“We had a fantastic event this year,” said CASA Program Director Samantha Creasey. “It's so inspiring to see so many smiling superhero faces on race day ready to support a great cause in their community.
“Our race slogan is 'Every child needs a hero, but abused and neglected children need superheroes,'” Creasey continued. “The money raised from this year's event will help fund our volunteer advocates, who are superheroes to abused and neglected children in foster care in the 10th Judicial Circuit."
CASA serves children in Marion, Ralls and Monroe counties and is a United Way of the Mark Twain Area agency.
“Time Out Teddy” of the Quincy Exchange Club, made a guest appearance at the starting line at 8 a.m. Tom and Becky provided course directions and presented awards after the race.
Superheroes of all ages had the opportunity to show off their superpowers during the race and prizes were awarded for best costumes, as well as race winners, Creasey said.
Foggy weather caused cancellation of the scheduled helicopter landing.
