Mary Ann Meyer, 97, of New London, MO, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 5, 2014, at the Willow Care Center in Hannibal, MO.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014, at 10 a.m., at the Grand View Funeral Home in Hannibal, MO. Father Mike Quinn will officiate. Burial will follow at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.
Mary was born in Mount Vernon, NY, one of eleven children, in 1917, and relocated to New London, MO with her husband, Hans Meyer, in 1951. They were the proprietors of the Town & Country Beauty Shop in New London during that period. They raised three children together.
Mary is survived by one daughter, Greta Meyer, of New London, MO; two sons, Paul (Brigid) Meyer of Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and Arnold (Angela) Meyer of St. Louis, MO; one step-daughter, Betty (Jim) Gibson of Escondido, CA; six grandchildren, Nicole, Danielle, Dominic, and Francesca Meyer, and Chris and Lauren Gibson; one brother, Nick Darpino; as well as one sister, Frances Christiano.
Mary was renowned for her cooking. She was very active in the Catholic Church, as well as in the local community, and her beauty shop was always a place to catch up on local news. She was most proud of her children and grandchildren, whose pictures adorned the walls of her shop for all to see as her family progressed in life. She was always there to comfort as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all in the community.
As for many who come to this area in search of adventure and new life, she left the big city of New York to join Hans in farm life, and raising their children to high standards in the hope and realization that they would make a better place in their life for the next generation to follow. Mary will be missed, as well as remembered, for the love and kindness she gave to all.
