  • Paul Tretiak, 87, of Hannibal, MO, formerly of Ilasco, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
    Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2014, at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel in Hannibal.  Pastor Michael Stoerger will officiate.  Burial with full military honors provided by Boots Dixon American Legion Post 174 will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.
    Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.
    Paul was born September 8, 1926, in Ilasco, the son of George and Susan (Bozalka) Tretiak.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sue Tretiak; and two brothers, George and John Tretiak.
    Mr. Tretiak is survived by a nephew, Ted Tretiak; a niece, Tracy and her husband Tom Erb their son Evan, a great nephew; a cousin, John Krudy and his wife Ethel; and his close friend, Dan Wieberg.
    Paul attended school at Ilasco and was a member of the 1944 Ilasco High School Graduation Class and was an outstanding athlete.  He attended the University of Missouri, graduating in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master’s Degree in Education in 1956.
    Mr. Tretiak served his country in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during WWII.
    Upon his return from his military service, Paul embarked on a professional baseball career that spanned more than 50 years.  Paul played second base in the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs organizations for eight seasons where he was a regular teammate of Hall of Fame member Whitney Herzog.  Following his playing career, Paul served one season as golf coach and assistant baseball coach at Southwest Illinois University at Carbondale before returning to his passion of professional baseball.  Paul coached and scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers organizations.  He would accumulate 3 World Series Championship rings during his baseball career.
    Paul had other talents such as being an accomplished pianist and organist.  When not traveling on the road, he played the church organ at the Ilasco Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ilasco from 1948 thru its last service in April of 1971.
    He was very proud of Slovak ancestry and Ilasco.  He was a supporter of the Ilasco Area Historical Society and its many projects.
    Pallbearers will be Dan Wieberg, Ted Tretiak, Tom Erb, David Polc, Bill Northcutt and Ron Ingram.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Nemes, Steve Wojcik, John Krudy and Evan Erb (Paul called him his “Little Guy” and they always talked baseball.)
    Memorials may be made to the Ilasco Area Historical Society or St. Johns Lutheran School, in care of Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.  Online condolences can be offered to the family at www.smithfuneralhomeandchapel.com
