  • A child or adult needing a pair of crutches while recovering from a sports injury may be fitted with them free of charge.
The victim just needs to contact Jana Suchland, coordinator of the medical loan closet provided by the Business Women of Missouri, Hannibal Chapter. Suchland’s telephone number is (573) 221-6186.
Loaning crutches is just one of the many services offered by the club with its medical loan closet, Suchland explained.
The loan closet, which has been provided by the club for more than 40 years, is also appreciated by people who are preparing for a visit by people who will temporarily need a wheelchair or other medical equipment, Suchland said.
“We get a lot of calls for regular wheelchairs and also for shower chairs.”
Larger items include hospital beds and wheelchairs. A large number of beds are available, along with about eight wheelchairs, both regular size and transport wheelchairs.
The medical loan closet also has several types of walkers, along with commodes and bath chairs, and other medical items.
The equipment was formerly loaned for a limit of six months, but that is no longer the policy, Suchland said. The time can be extended.
This service is especially valuable for people who are not yet qualified for Medicare or Medicaid assistance when they have an urgent need, she said. “We are a stopgap” for them and also for people who  “can’t afford to rent” the needed equipment.
Someone might be waiting for ordered equipment to arrive and need to borrow items for a brief time, she said.
Suchland noted that the equipment needs to be picked up by the family needing it.
    Club welcomes new members
The Hannibal Chapter of the Business Women of Missouri welcomes new members, Suchland said. She is serving as co-president with Ann Moyers.
The club’s goals are furthering women’s education and promoting equal opportunities and equal pay, Suchland said.
She, Moyers or Wendy Murphy may be contacted for more information.
Details about the club also are on its Facebook page.
