  • Mrs. Mary Elenora Akers, 85, of Louisiana, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri.

  • Mrs. Mary Elenora Akers, 85, of Louisiana, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri.
    She was born August 21, 1928, in Louisiana, Missouri, the daughter of Thomas and Nora Poyser Travis.
    She married Charles Edward Akers October 27, 1951, at the First Baptist Church parsonage in Louisiana, Missouri, and he preceded her in death November 18, 1999.
    Mary is survived by two sons, Rev. Darrell R. Akers (Rhonda) of Mineral Wells, Texas, and Allan J. Akers (Dana) of Louisiana, Missouri; two daughters, Joyce Gunn (Ralph) of Versailles, Missouri, and Charlotte Akers and Michael West of Winfield, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Jessica Bauman, Kimberly Ingersoll, Christopher Gunn, Raymond Akers, Jennifer King, Alex Kennedy and Trella Akers; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Davis of Elsberry, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Travis and Faye Presley; two brothers-in-law, Russell Hobkirk and Robert Watts; and nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by six brothers, Thomas Wade Travis Jr., Kenneth Travis and unnamed twin, William Rufus Travis, Albert Marion Travis and Okey Warren Travis; and by four sisters, Martha Louise Travis, Marceline Frances Hobkirk, Florence Kathryn Hobkirk and Anna Elizabeth Lame.
    She had been employed at the Wells-Lamont Glove Factory in the Packing Department for several years. She later opened her own licensed Day Care Center named Mary’s Day Care Center in Louisiana and operated it for 35 years before retiring in 1999.
    She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Louisiana and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. Mary had a special gift for working with children and helping to develop their abilities. She was a dedicated wife and mother.
    Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2014, at the Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana. The Rev. Don Kelley assisted by the Rev. Darrell R. Akers will officiate.
    Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at the funeral home.
    Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery near Louisiana, Missouri.
    Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church in Louisiana or to the Pike Nutrition Center, in care of Collier Funeral Homes Inc., 117 Barnard Drive, Louisiana, M0 63353.
