  • On Saturday, July 5, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) reported the following roads in Northeast Missouri were closed due to flooding along the Mississippi River.
    Clark County
U.S. 61 at Alexandria approximately 2.4 miles east of U.S. 136 near the Des Moines River Bridge
    Lewis County
Route B - Flood gates installed just north of Canton; road closed from state Highway 16 in Canton to U.S. 61
    Pike County
State Highway 79 south of Louisiana, low areas near Buffalo Creek beginning near city limits of Louisiana, South Carolina to Delaware streets to approximately south of Route D
Route P east of Pike County Road 201, closed at the levee to the Mississippi River access
MoDOT reminded motorists it is dangerous to drive into water-covered roads. It only takes a few inches of water to knock over an adult and cause loss of control of a vehicle. A foot of water will float many vehicles and only two feet of rushing water will carry them away, including pickups and SUVs.
The depth of flood water is not always obvious. It can be especially hard to judge at night. The best option is to play it safe and turn around. MoDOT will continue to monitor the flooded areas and update if conditions change.
All closures can be found on the MoDOT website at http://www.modot.org/ on the Traveler Information Map.  Since waters rise and fall quickly during flash flooding, MoDOT recommends motorists check the website or call MoDOT Customer Service toll-free at 1-888-275-6636 for the latest road closure information.
