  • “It’s a tragic event,” said Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Shinn, as he reported the apparent suicide of an inmate at the Marion County Jail in Palmyra.
On Thursday, July 3, Shinn reported his office and Marion County Coroner Darrell McCoy’s office were investigating the death of the inmate.
McCoy reported the suicide victim was Steven Craig Caskey, 22, of Hannibal, Mo.
McCoy said an autopsy was scheduled for today, July 4, in Columbia, Mo.
Caskey was found at about 7:03 a.m. July 3 by the Marion County Detention Staff, Shinn said, and the apparent cause of death was suicide by hanging.
Shinn explained Caskey was not on suicide watch, because “we had no warning he was having any mental health issues.
“All of our hearts are heavy this morning, and our sympathies go out to the deceased and his family members,” Shinn said.
Funeral services for Caskey are pending at the James O’Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.
"The sheriff’s department is offering counseling to the inmates who were in Caskey’s pod, Shinn said. “We also are offering counseling to my employees, who are taking it very hard.
“It not an easy job, and when something like this happens, it makes it that much more difficult.”
Missouri court records show Caskey was arrested June 12, 2014, on a charge of second degree domestic assault. His arraignment was scheduled for July 11, 2014.
