  • Summer school is not the only reason the Hannibal public school district is such a busy place at this time of year. An assortment of summer projects are also underway. A recap of the work that either has taken place or will be occurring was provided during Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting.
According to Rich Stilley, business manager for the school district, typical painting and mowing has already begun throughout the district.
Among the special endeavors are lighting projects at the middle school and in Patterson Gym at the high school. The re-lighting of Patterson Gym has already been completed. Also undertaken is the replacing of sidewalk in front of the high school. Stilley is hopeful that the weather cooperates today (Thursday) and that “16 yards” of new concrete can be poured at the high school.
The process of resealing and striping of the south parking lot at the high school began on June 9. The installation of barricades, to help with traffic flow, will likely begin early next week, according to Stilley. Additional signage is also planned at that parking lot to help guide drivers onto northbound McMaster’s Avenue.
Work on the dropping of ceilings and installation of new lighting at Oakwood Elementary also began the week of June 9. Three rooms have already been completed.
At the Hannibal Career & Technical Center, major work is being done to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Stilley says one large compressor is being rebuilt while another will be replaced.
Stilley added that upgrades to the track surface at Porter Stadium, plus roof repairs and pipe replacement at the middle school will take place in July and August.
Included among the safety and security projects are a district-wide camera upgrade, the installation of a KeyScan system at the Early Childhood Center, and the installation of new doors at Korf Gym and the middle school.
