  • Charles Melker Davidson, 78, of Monroe City, Missouri,  passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at the University of Missouri Medical Center, Columbia, Missouri.
    He was born January 30, 1936, in Hannibal, Missouri, the son of James Franklin and Helen Naomi Melker Davidson.
    Charlie was baptized Methodist as a young man. He was a graduate of Hannibal High School, Hannibal, Missouri. He then attended the University of Missouri, where he played on the football team.
    Charlie worked as a heavy equipment operator for Bleigh Construction Company for many years. He also worked for D&H Equipment, Monroe City, Missouri, as a mechanic. After retirement Charlie helped area farmers in the fields. He was an avid supporter and consultant of the Monroe County Special Road District. He and his wife, Mary Jo, were "river rats" they enjoyed spending time on the Mississippi River in their boat with family and friends. They also enjoyed houseboating on the Mark Twain Lake after their retirement.
    He married Mary Jo Hirner October 4, 1975. She passed away February 9, 2013.
    Survivors include four daughters, Rose Gregory and husband, George, Columbia, Mo., Carin Croll and husband, Greg, Columbia, Mo., Laura Davidson, Columbia, Mo., and Deborah Rupp, Balch Springs, Texas. He was also survived by six grandchildren; one great-grandson; nieces; nephews; and a special friend, Debbie Utterback.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one brother, Jim Davidson; and one sister, Molly Jones.
    Graveside funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hannibal, Missouri. Rev. Steve Goughnour will officiate.
    Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday evening at the Garner Funeral Home, Monroe City, Missouri.
    Pallbearers will be Jordan Rupp, Bob Rupp, Joe Crane, Artie Whelan, Pat Hays and Gerry Copenhaver.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Eric Gregory and Gregory Croll.
    Garner Funeral Home and Chapel, Monroe City, Missouri is in charge of arrangements.
