  • Before hearing messages from classmates Melanie Blase and Lijah Harrison, then receiving their diplomas on Thursday, May 22, the Hannibal High School Class of 2014 lined up for their graduation processional in Korf Gymnasium.
The school was prepared to have the ceremonies both at Porter Stadium and Korf Gym, and the weather forecast prompted the decision to have graduation indoors. This proved wise, as rain was falling prior to the 7 p.m. opening music.
The graduation program included a pirate ship and the message: “Our journey has only just begun!”
The class motto, published in the program, was “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit.” – Aristotle.
One graduate - Bradley Campbell - had a special surprise just before marching into the gym to the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance.”
Campbell’s name was called as the students were lining up for their processional. As his classmates cheered, Campbell was presented a new car, a Honda Fit.
He won the car in a drawing sponsored by the Quincy Mall and Dene Lambkin Honda. Campbell had 22 entries in the drawing, by earning 22 As on his report cards during his senior year. “It was well worth the As,” he said.
After posing for pictures with the car, Campbell said he was going to give it to his mother to drive, and he is going to Linn State Technical College.
Michael Jenkins, director of marketing at the Quincy Mall, reported the drawing was offered to seniors in eight area schools, and the more As they earned, the more chances they had to win.
Many of the graduates planned to attend their Project Graduation after the ceremonies at the school. Sarah Blankenship was looking forward to seeing the hypnotist.
Cheyenne Bell and Blankenship have planned their future careers. Bell plans to become a critical care nurse by earning an RN at Quincy University. Blankenship's future will focus on early childhood.
She will attend Hannibal-LaGrange University, along with 10 more members of the Class of 2014.
Another graduate, Joey Bridges, reported his favorite high school memory was “having Coach (Eric) Hill as my gym teacher.” Bridges plans to attend Moberly Area Community College (MACC), then Truman University.
Bridges was among 41 members of the Class of 2014 who plan to attend MACC, making it their most popular choice. Most of them had the A-Plus designation, which will help finance their education.
Another 18 grads will be heading to one of the University of Missouri campuses.
Many of the graduates received honors and scholarships, and their program listed numerous academic and sports awards received by their class.
