  • Proposed budget includes teacher raises

  • The 2014-15 budget was a topic of discussion during Tuesday night’s Palmyra R-1 Board of Education meeting.
    The budget includes an increase to the base salary for teachers of $950 plus steps for years of experience, a 3 percent raise for all other employees plus steps for years of experience, increasing summer school pay for teacher to $25 per hour, and increasing bus driver trip pay to $10 per hour.
    The purchase of a new 53-passenger school bus and a district eight-passenger SUV is also included in the budget. 
    The final budget will be presented at the June board meeting. 
    The board did adopt the 2014-15 salary schedules for teachers and support staff.  The base salary for teachers is $32,050. Non-certified salary schedules were also adopted with the same percentage increase.
    In other business:
    • Approval was given a resolution authorizing and directing the issuance and delivery of $6 million general obligation bonds, series 2014.
    • The board authorized the administration to enter into discussions on re-negotiating the contract with Refreshment Services Pepsi.
    • Approval was given the Special Education Local Compliance Plan for the 2014-2015 school year.
    • The following resignations were accepted: Sharon Burwinkle, first grade teacher, Betty Anders-PAT parent educator, and Dianne Brumbaugh, high school Quiz Bowl.
    • The following hirings were approved: Sharon Burwinkle, part-time elementary school technology teacher, Marty Smyser, high school social studies teacher and assistant varsity football coach, Robyn Cottrell, elementary school custodian, Dianne Brumbaugh, assistant FCCLA sponsor. 
    • The board hired summer maintenance help as presented, all classified staff as presented and all extra-duty staff as presented.
    • During a May 5 special board meeting Nathan Hathaway, elementary school teacher, and Tiffany Miller, elementary school teacher, were hired.
