Velma Louise Meyers, 99, of Palmyra, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra. Velma was born January 23, 1915 in Palmyra, Missouri to Clyde and Glenna Gobble Phelps. Velma was married to William Henry Meyers, Jr. November 11, 1933 in Hannibal, Missouri. He preceded her in death September 29, 1991.
Survivors include:son, Glen Richard (Mamie) Meyers of Palmyra; dauther-in-law, Judy Meyers of Palmyra; siblings: Edna Zieger of Palmyra; Elmer Phelps of Palmyra; Warren (Elsie) Phelps of Palmyra; grandchildren: Linda Smith of Burlington, IA; Holly Meyers of Palmyra; Brenda Meyers of Quincy, 8 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Marion Eugene Meyers; brothers, Clarence Phelps and Ivan Phelps; and a grandson, Gale Meyers.
Mrs. Meyers attended country schools in Marion County, Missouri. She had formerly worked at the Crown Shoe Factory in Palmyra.
Velma loved to sew and quilt and could design and make almost anything. She was a gifted musician who could play both the piano and the guitar. She and her husband enjoyed getting together with friends and having country music jam fests. She loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener as well as a food canning preserver. She was a member of the Palmyra United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Rev. Eric Anderson will officiate. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra, Missouri. Visitation will be from 10-11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Palmyra United Methodist Church.
