WHAT IS IT? Employees of the Hannibal public school district were busy Tuesday morning removing an old section of sidewalk outside Eugene Field Elementary School.
Improvements were underway Tuesday morning outside of Eugene Field Elementary School in Hannibal.
An old section of sidewalk, extending from the city-maintained sidewalk to the school, was being broken into pieces and removed.
Rich Stilley, business manager of the Hannibal public school district, described the sidewalk being removed as “very antiquainted and unsafe.”
“It was heaving and cracking,” said Stilley, which he attributed in part to drainage issues that had developed.
Before any new concrete is poured some trenching, intended to help resolve the drainage problems, will be taking place.
Stilley is hopeful the project will be completed either this week or next week.
The estimated cost of the project is $5,000. Helping hold down the expense is the fact that school district personnel are performing the work. District staff recently installed a new sidewalk at Stowell Elementary from the school to a playground.
