  • For decades, the Hannibal Booster Club provided funds for an assortment of items to benefit athletes. In the future, the benefactors of the Booster Club’s generosity will not just be those involved in sports.
In addition to athletic teams, the Pirate Pride Corporate Sponsorship Program (PPCSP) will back the Academic Team, band, choir, HHS musical, NHS (National Honor Society), Pirate Relay for Life, Pirate TV, River City Revue, the Science , Student Council, and all other school groups and clubs.
According to Terry Sampson, a member of the Hannibal Board of Education, the transition was not undertaken in haste.
“We’ve been working on it for four or five months, putting all the concepts together,” he said. “This is something new the Booster Club is trying. It will be a work in progress. We’ll tweak it as we go along. We appreciate any support we can get.”
Sampson says booster groups in other parts of the state have successfully adopted similar formats. Among the closest communities with this sort of booster format is Kirksville.
“Kirksville has done real well with it,” he said.
The objective of the change is to support more students, according to Sampson.
“Our goal is to not only benefit athletes. Any students can benefit from this. We hope to supplement funding by the district to reach more groups,” he said.
To generate revenue, the PPCSP will offer advertising exposure to target customers at the high school's athletic events and competitions throughout the school year. Some of the funds will be utilized by the district to supplement continued programs for students.
According to PPCSP organizers, local businesses that “participate in a higher level of sponsorship” will not be solicited for additional projects by other Hannibal High School groups.
While the new campaign is just being unveiled, there has already been support.
“So far we’ve had eight commitments at the top level, which is pretty good,” said Sampson. “We’ve also sent letters to 60 to 70 businesses. Some have said they want to think about it, which we understand. We are following up now trying to meet with the businesses.”
Corporate Sponsorship includes three levels of membership that includes signage, announcements and season passes for a supporting business or organization, along with other incentives.
Those participating at the $3,000 Pirate Club Sponsorship Level will receive:
    • Signage (4-foot by 8-foot) at Porter Stadium.
