  • Hannibal native Darin Powell is coming home.
Powell, who has worked in the Bowling Green school district since 2008, is returning to the Hannibal public school district as assistant superintendent for student services. His new duties begin July 1. The announcement was made Tuesday.
“We’re excited to have Darin back in the school district, just as I know he is,” said Susan Johnson, who will be superintendent of the Hannibal school district following the retirement of Jill Janes following the current school year. “Darin is a long-time Hannibal Pirate and it’s nice to have him back home.”
A graduate of Hannibal High School, Powell spent the first 18 years of his education career in the Hannibal public school district. He first taught math for eight years at the middle and high schools. After serving as HHS assistant principal for three years, he spent seven years as head principal at the school.
Powell became principal of Bowling Green High School in 2008. He was named Missouri High School Principal of the Year in 2011. He was named the district’s interim superintendent for the 2011-12 school year. In January 2012, the community's board of education voted unanimously to drop the "interim" from Powell's job title.
After spending six years in Bowling Green, Powell says leaving is not easy.
“I can’t say enough about the staff I work with. It’s been a day of many mixed emotions,” he said.
Powell is looking forward to a professional reunion with Johnson, Maria Mundle, who last week was named assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and Rich Stilley, district business manager.
“Put us together, with our diverse backgrounds, and we’ll have a pretty awesome team to lead the Hannibal school district,” said Powell.
Johnson is confident Powell will be a great fit in the district’s new administrative team.
“His skill set is going to be an excellent fit for this position,” she said. “Darin is very passionate about kids and families. This position will lend itself nicely to his belief in kids and their future.”
Going from superintendent to assistant superintendent doesn’t bother Powell in the least.
“This will give me a chance to focus on a handful of specific duties. It’s a great fit for me,” he said.
Powell got his bachelor’s degree from Northeast Missouri State (now Truman) University. He earned a master's degree in secondary education administration and a specialist in education administration degree from William Woods University.
Powell has resided in Hannibal his entire life. He is married and has two sons, one a junior at HHS and the other a freshman at Truman State University.
