  • The judges at the Hannibal Jaycees’ 10th annual Wing Ding today, Jan. 25, at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center will be busier than usual.
This year the Wing Ding will have 11 teams serving hot wings. This will be a big increase in the variety of wings to be judged – and tried by the people attending, according to Jamie McCoy, Jaycees president who also is chairperson of this year’s event.
“We usually have seven or eight (teams),” McCoy said.
First, second and third place teams will win cash awards. In 2013, Wing Busters of Quincy, Ill., took first place.
The Wing Ding, for adults age 21 and older, will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.
The wings will be served beginning at 1 p.m., with judging at 4 p.m., McCoy said.
The Wing Ding is co-sponsored by the Jaycees and Mark Twain Distributing, she explained, and a portion of the proceeds this year will be donated to the Bear Creek Sports Park.
A beard contest is planned, sponsored by State Beauty Supply. “Fun prizes” will be awarded in four categories, McCoy said. They are: beard, goatee, moustache and sideburns.
“A shaving station will be set up,” she said, for the men who have grown a beard for the contest and are eager to be clean-shaven again.
Why are so many wings teams entered this year? McCoy believes it might be attributed to the theme, “Wing Dynasty,” from the “Duck Dynasty” TV show. “That is where the beard comes into play.”
Several additional games are planned. “We will have our typical beer Olympics,” she said, “and a ‘Minute To Win It’ game will be done all day.”
A wing-eating contest will be sponsored by the Country Butcher Shop of Palmyra.
Also, “Bat Creek Brewery is doing some beer sampling,” McCoy said.
The music will be handled by some Jaycees, who are all deejays she said. They are Bryan Hammock, Glen Irick and Chris Powell.
