WHAT IS IT? Roberts Demolition and Roll-off personnel were busy Tuesday morning beginning the process of taking down the structure at 213 Broadway in downtown Hannibal.

The process of demolishing 213 Broadway in downtown Hannibal was underway on Tuesday morning.

Workers with Roberts Demolition and Roll-off, the contractor for the project, were using a lift to gain access to the top of the building’s wall that faces Broadway. Bricks were being removed by hand from the top of the structue and tossed into a dumpster beneath the workers.

With work taking place on the street side of the building, eastbound traffic in that area was reduced to just one lane. In addition, the alley that runs just west of 213 Broadway was also closed to traffic.

The project began on Monday when the lift arrived at the site.

During the recent meeting of the Building Commission, Building Inspector Joey Burnham quoted contractor Mike Roberts as saying he expects the building to come down “pretty quick.”

Roberts Demolition and Roll-off was awarded the project by the City Council in December after another contractor failed to begin work.
