  • A residence on Valley Street sustained significant fire damage on Friday night in Hannibal.
Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. when a call was received reporting that flames were visible at 1521 Valley St.
It was not immediately known if anyone was at home at the time of the blaze. The name of the occupant was not available at press time.
A portion of the east wall of the single-story frame house was gone. The east side of the house appeared to have suffered significant fire damage, with other areas of the structure suffering considerable smoke and water damage.
Conditions at the scene were treacherous due to the snow cover. Firefighters climbed upon the side of the roof with the least amount of snow so that they could cut a hole and help ventilate smoke from the home.
    There were no apparent injuries.
A Hannibal Fire Department investigator was called to the scene to help determine the cause of the fire.
It was not the first time that firefighters have been called to that address. On Jan. 2, 2009, the flue of a wood stove was cited as the cause of a fire at the home.
The home’s resident at the time, Joyce LaFond, reported being awakened by the barking of her dogs around 9:30 p.m. It was then she realized her house was full of smoke.
In that blaze, the minor fire damage was confined to one room, although there was light smoke damage throughout the house.
