  • The recent spell of cold weather has already begun to cause problems for the Hannibal Board of Public Works and at least some of its customers.
“We haven’t had any (water) mains freeze up, but we’ve had three water (line) breaks in two days,” said Heath Hall, director of operations for the BPW, noting that the cold so far has not been the culprit as much as the shifting of the ground.
With the coldest temperatures in a decade forecast early next week in Hannibal, more problems are anticipated.
“The freezing/thaw causes us problems with the mains and when it gets really, really cold like it’s going to be individual services freeze … the meters. Sometimes it’s on the customers and sometimes on us. Either way we’ve got to go out and try to thaw them out,” said Hall. “We’ve had a handful of those, frozen either in the meter pit or under somebody’s house in a crawl space or something like that.”
It’s not uncommon for the BPW’s phone to ring when someone finds their water pipes are frozen.
“They’ll call us and we’ll come out and look at it and thaw out as much as we can,” said Hall on Friday afternoon. “We’ve had a handful already and they just had one this afternoon. They’ll keep happening all the way through probably Wednesday of next week.”
Frozen pipes are not uncommon, according to Hall.
“That pretty much happens every year,” he said. “Sometimes it’s the same meters and sometimes it’s new ones.”
Hall says people utilize different means to keep their water pipes from freezing.
“Heat tape and insulation, those things work,” he said. “Some people will open their cabinets and put a little plug in heater right next to the cabinet. We used to run the water all the time when we were growing up. Obviously that costs a little bit of money. Any of those things should help you.”
