Baby born Jan. 1 at Northeast Regional

Kirksville has its first baby of 2014.

Herizen Lyn was born Wednesday, Jan. 1, at 2:34 p.m. to Kayla and Russell at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.

NRMC requested the family's last name be withheld due to security reasons.

Herizen Lyn weighed seven pounds, seven ounces and measured 19.5 inches in length. She is the family's second child, joining her older brother, Layton, who will turn 4 in July.

Kayla said the baby was due Dec. 30 but "she had to cook a little longer."

She initially went to NRMC on Dec. 31 when she thought she felt labor pains, but was sent home. She returned the next day and was admitted about the same time as two other mothers to-be.

Kayla, Russell and Herizen Lyn won the race.

"Once I was going, I was gone," Kayla said.

Russell was in charge of naming the baby and chose the middle name, Lyn, after his mother. As for Herizen?

"I wrote it out about 20 different ways," Russell said. "That's what came out."

The family said the care at NRMC has been "amazing." Kayla gave birth to their first child before the hospital's fifth-floor renovation and they've enjoyed the new surroundings.

"This is paradise," she said.

The family received a gift package from NRMC for the honor of having the first baby of 2014. Gifts included a car seat, diapers, clothing, a baby doll and more.
