  • With 465 families each having an appointed time to pick up the Christmas assistance provided by the Hannibal Salvation Army, Douglass Community Services and Toys for Tots, the distribution went smoothly Friday, Dec. 20, at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center.
While the toys were provided by all three agencies, the food baskets were provided by the Salvation Army, according to Salvation Army Lt. Linnea Forney.
The families receiving gifts and food baskets totaled 247, she said, and 500 children received toys.
Lt. Linnea and her husband, Lt. Rich Forney, were in charge of the Hannibal food and toy distribution. Many of the toys had been donated in the Toys for Tots campaign, and the distribution this year was done jointly by Douglass Community Services and the Salvation Army.
Lt. Linnea explained each child received about five toys. After receiving the boxes labeled for a family from the Toys for Tots project, each family selected two more toys from the gifts spread across tables. Each child also received a stuffed animal and a book, Lt. Linnea said.
This year many more people were picking up Christmas food baskets than last year, she said, because a large group of senior adults were included.
“Last year we had 129 families” receiving only food baskets, and this year there were nearly 100 more, she reported.
Volunteers with DCS were handling the records as the recipients arrived to pick up their gifts. Betty Moyers, Linda Wood and Kathy Corum were kept busy with this task.
The Salvation Army volunteers - including Nanette and Joe Johnson and their children - were assisted by volunteers from the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department and the Kids in Motion summer youth program.
KIM kids helping were Jared Johnson, Carlee Bradford, Andelin Bray, Dale Rhodes, Donterrias Raymond and Mercadees Widebrook.
