  • A variety of career goals were expressed by some of the 60 Class of 2014 mid-term graduates at Hannibal High School on Thursday, Dec. 19, as they gathered in the cafeteria in caps and gowns to prepare for their graduation ceremony in the HHS auditorium.
Lacey Lewis will begin her nursing education next fall at Quincy University and plans to specialize in labor and delivery.
Alex Bricker will attend the Ocean Corps in Houston, Texas, to learn underwater welding. This will prepare him for a career in oil rigs or ships, he explained.
Shawn White has enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and has already begun his basic training.
Allison Williams will begin college next fall, studying psychology. Karee Feather will be attending the Advance Beauty College to become a cosmetologist.
Leighton Jones will enroll in Ranken Technical College to study precision machinery.
Kourtney McCoy hopes to have a career in law enforcement, following the example of her dad, Dale McCoy, a former sheriff.
Shadowlynne Davis will go to Missouri Western State University to major in criminal justice. She wants to help others, she said. “My brother has a probation officer and is slowly improving his life.”
Sabrina Garrelts is not sure what she will do in the future but will go to college.
Richard Howell’s career has already begun. He is technical director at The Crossing in Hannibal.
Jamey Dyke will study arts or music. Paige Marshall plans to become a veterinary technician.
Darrell McCullough II plans a military career with the National Guard.
These are just a few of the graduates who received their diplomas Thursday after HHS Principal Ted Sampson had challenged them to become successful in the future. “Whether you are entering the work force, pursuing postsecondary education or joining the military, make a positive contribution,” he said. “Be prepared to work hard. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty and be willing to help others along the way.
“You have learned a lot academically while you were a student at HHS, but more importantly I hope you have learned even more about life and being a successful person.
“I hope that your teachers and coaches have stressed the importance of having patience and persistence, and the importance of giving great effort,” Sampson continued. “There will be times in your life when obstacles seem to be plentiful and opportunities are scarce. Patience will serve you well in these times, but I caution you to avoid complacency. Continue to work diligently to achieve your goals.
“Few great successes in life come without putting forth a great deal of effort,” Sampson said. “To achieve your goals and find success you must be willing to give great effort. ... As you go into the world to make your mark, I hope you will strive to make positive contributions, to be patient and persistent and to give great effort in all things you do.”
