  • The Hannibal Board of Education plans to cast a wide net when looking to find a replacement for retiring Superintendent of Schools Jill Janes. During Tuesday night’s special board meeting school board members decided to seek state help in finding potential candidates.
“The Missouri School Board Association (MSBA) provides a search service and we entered into a contract with them tonight to assist us in our search for a new superintendent,” said Dr. David Jackson, Board of Education president, following the meeting.
The MSBA will do more than spread the word of Hannibal’s vacancy throughout the Show-Me State.
“It also will in 39 other states,” said Jackson. “It gives us very broad coverage so we can find the best candidate for superintendent.
“This (finding the next superintendent) is probably the most important task a board has and we take it very seriously.”
The application period will last for approximately a month, according to Jackson.
“We will accept applications probably through the first part of January with a decision to be made probably within the first week of February,” he said.
Jackson invites input from the public.
“They can contact any of the school board members and let them be aware of it,” he said.
In November, Janes informed the Board of Education of her plans to retire at the end of the current school year. She has served as the district’s superintendent since 2004. Janes was hired as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in 1999.
