Some Hannibalians brought relatives from elsewhere, such as Dr. Lent Johnson and his wife, Dr. Sandra Ahlum, with her sister, Mary Beth Ahlum of Lincoln, Neb.
On North Main Street, shoppers were taking advantage of the special sales and events offered at local businesses.
Cheryl and Wes McGowan were pleased with their foods from the Mississippi Marketplace. She displayed her chunky potato soup mix, while he was happy with his caramel puffs and crunchy nut delights.
One couple represented two states - Laura Person was from Overland Park, Kan., and Philip Witkop from Springfield, Ill.
A family from St. Louis included Ned and Neli Miteb, Lexie and Michelle, and their little dog, Princess. Two of them were staying on the sidewalk with Princess while the others shopped.
A trio from Quincy, Ill., was proud of their purchases. Lois Schlueter explained she bought art at Danni Nicole’s. Susan Goodwin also lives in Quincy but works in Hannibal at Preferred Healthcare. She bought kitchen gadgets at The Main Street Kitchen store.
Julie Bice bought a Christmas tree at Abby Rose and said it was for her classroom at John Wood Community College. She also bought a Christmas picture to use in classroom. She found it in an antique store behind Chocolaterie Stam, where the group had gelatos. They all agreed, ”We love Hannibal.”
An Iowa family had stopped for lunch at Java Jive on their return trip, after visiting their daughter and new baby in St. Louis. Bill and Ginny Colville of Colfax, Iowa, and three daughters, Willa, Ellen and Carly, were having sandwiches and desserts at Java Jive.
“We stopped here purposely to eat,” Ginny said. “We have been here before.”
