  • State funds will be used by the Hannibal public school district to help replace one of its fleet’s older buses.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday it has awarded five school districts funding to replace aging school buses with cleaner running versions through the Missouri Clean Diesel Program. In addition to Hannibal, the other districts selected are Clever R-V School District, Joplin Schools, Ozark R-6 School District and West County R-IV School District.
Hannibal is due to receive up to 25 percent of the cost of a new school bus, with a maximum of $20,000.
“To get the regular size, 71 passenger (bus), it’s somewhere in the $80,000 range. We’re going to get 25 percent of a bus or thereabouts. That’s a good number,” said Rich Stilley, business manager for the Hannibal school district.
Funding is provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the Emission Reduction Act (DERA) State Clean Diesel Program. The grants are administered by the Department of Natural Resources’ Early School Bus Replacement Program.
According to Stilley, Hannibal was eligible for funds because it has a bus with emissions that are less than the 2011 EPA standards.
The bus being replaced cannot be used as trade in for a new bus or sold outright to another school district.
“This bus that is going to be replaced will be scrapped. We have to drill a hole in the engine block. No one can buy it. We’ll just have to sell it for scrap,” said Stilley.
Additional buses may also be replaced by the district.
“We have a rotation schedule,” said Stilley. “We replaced three last fiscal year. We’re in the process of getting bids together to look to see how many we need for this upcoming school year that would be delivered in June, and one would be as a portion of this grant.”
