  • Hannibal called to Canton to help fight downtown fire

  • Hannibal firefighters left Hannibal at 8:30 p.m. Friday en route to Canton to respond to a call for mutual aid.
    A fire at Fourth and Lewis streets in downton Canton was reported to local firefighters around 7 p.m. The fire ultimately consumed three of four businesses owned by the Janney family in Canton.
    The family’s building supply store was expected to be saved from the fire. The other buildings contained tools, paint and building supply merchandise.
    At presstime, the firefighters were still working to control the fire.
    An earlier fire at 712 Lewis St., Canton, was extinguished. Less than an hour and a half later, the commercial buildings were reported to be on fire.
