A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be at 11 a.m., Friday, November 1, 2013, at the James O’Donnell Funeral Home. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the James O’Donnell Funeral Home.
Dorothy Hardin was born on November 21, 1922, in Hannibal, MO, to Charles and Alice “Allie” Williams Hardin. As she grew up in “The Holler,” Dorothy met a boy across the road, Homer Lain, and at the age of 16 she became his bride.  Together they are survived by 3 children, Carol Kenady (Leon) of Hull, Illinois; Harlon Lain (Nina) and Ruth Cowden (Gary Dicks) both of Hannibal, MO.
Following Homer’s death in 1973 she surrounded herself with family and friends and spent the rest of her days working hard to support herself. Dorothy was one of the first employees on the line at Underwood Company (General Mills) and worked there until her retirement in 1985. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, especially to visit her niece Betty Crenshaw and family in Indiana. She also enjoyed playing games, watching television, doing puzzles, and dining out.  Dorothy grew up in the Mennonite Church and later became a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church. She was a Christian woman with a strong faith who gave generously to everyone who crossed her path.
Dorothy loved her family with her whole heart. She was a doting mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who endured the heartache of losing three of her precious grandchildren: James Lain Kenady in 1981, Steven Wayne Hull in 1986, and great-granddaughter Kira Lynn Kenady in 2004.
Dorothy was also preceded in death by her sister Ruth Adams, brothers Ed Hardin and Paul Collins, son-in-law Dave Cowden, and many dear friends who went on before her.
Dorothy is also survived by her grandchildren: Danita Kenady Harpole (Edwin) of El Dara, IL; Jeff Kenady and Jon Kenady of Plainville, IL; Cathy Lain Fohey (John) of Palmyra, MO, Brady Cowden (Megan) of O’Fallon, MO, and Curtis Lain (Tonja), Debbie Lain Williams (Todd) and Scott Hull all of Hannibal, MO. Dorothy also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Dorothy loved the company of little children and delighted in each and every one of them.
Dorothy’s greatest joy in life was being a mother and grandmother and she leaves all who loved her with precious and often funny memories, but most of all with a legacy of love.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons Jeff Kenady, Curtis Lain, John Fohey, Todd Williams, Scott Hull, and Brady Cowden. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jon Kenady and Edwin Harpole.
The family would like to thank her caretakers at Willow Care Nursing Home for their tender care throughout her residency there.
