Another busy weekend of sports is upon us as most of the area teams will be in action and almost all of them will be trying to keep their winning streaks going.  Every weekend so far this month has been incredible and I fully expect that trend to continue this weekend.

The Kirksville High School Tigers travel to Fulton for a game with the Hornets tonight.  The Tigers come into the final game of the regular season with a record of 4 and 4 having won their last three games and their last two in dominating fashion.  Fulton was shut out by Mexico last week and although they have been known to put a lot of points on the board, the Tigers defense has really played well the last several games and I think they can handle anything Fulton will throw at them.  This game looks to me like two teams headed in opposite directions and I fully expect the Tigers to come home with a victory to finish the regular season with a winning record for the first time in several years.  If KHS can beat Fulton tonight they will most likely host the first round of district play next week.  I have no idea who they would play as of yet but it would be a major feather in the cap for the Tigers to be able to do that after the way the season was going a few weeks ago.

Saturday is when things really start hopping.  The Truman State Bulldogs football team goes for their fourth win in a row as they renew their rivalry with Missouri Sand T, otherwise known as the Rolla Miners.  Truman is coming off a big win last week against McKendrie and will be facing a totally different type of defense this week which will present a challenge for the Bulldogs offense but I think they are more than up to the task.  I’m really looking forward to this game as I think it will be an excellent game.  I expect it to be low scoring but I see no reason why Truman cannot move their record to 6 and 2 and 4 and 0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.  Most of the other Truman State fall sports will be in action as well.

The South Carolina Gamecocks will be in Columbia for the Missouri Tigers homecoming game on Saturday night.  The Gamecocks were upset last week by Tennessee and lost their starting quarterback in the process.  The Tigers are coming off two huge upsets in a row and are looking to make it three.  Maty Mauk performed quite well at quarterback last week in the absence of James Franklin and if that can hold up this week then Missouri could very well remain undefeated.  South Carolina’s defense has given up a lot of points so far this year and although they have a high powered offense it’s a big question mark as to how they will perform without the starting QB.  I believe they have other players banged up as well so this could be a very intriguing game.  The college football world is focusing very heavily on Mizzou right now so there is a lot of pressure to continue the streak of big wins.

Unfortunately, the Mizzou game will be going on at the same time that the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox are playing Game 3 of the World Series.  The series is all knotted up at 1 game each after another brilliant pitching performance by Michael Wacha last night.  This kid just keeps impressing me every time he takes the mound.  I’m glad he’s on our side.  Game 1 was not a pretty thing to behold for Cardinals fans but Game 2 was a totally different story.  So far the series has gone exactly like I thought it would.  The Game 3 pitching matchup is in interesting one with Joe Kelly starting for the Cardinals and Jake Peavy starting for the Red Sox.  Kelly has really pitched well during the postseason while Peavy has been up and down all year and tends to be either really on or really off.  When he’s on he’s unhittable, when he isn’t he doesn’t last long.  We have to hope that is the case on Saturday night.  The Cardinals need to take at least two out of three at home to have a shot at winning the World Series in my opinion.  Obviously it would be great if they could win all three and wrap up the series on Monday but the teams are probably too evenly matched for that to happen.

Sunday finds the Kansas City Chiefs entertaining the Cleveland Browns in what will almost surely be another easy victory for the Chiefs.  The Browns are not very good and the Chiefs defense should have absolutely no problem with them at all.  The Browns defense isn’t very good either and Sunday’s game will hopefully be an excellent opportunity for the Chiefs offense to work on some things and get some other people involved besides Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles.  In fact, I’d really like to see the Chiefs give Charles especially a break and allow him to rest up his chronic feet issues.  Play him a little bit but give some other people an opportunity to step up.  This could play dividends later on this year.  The Chiefs haven’t gotten to the toughest part of their schedule yet and there is still a long way to go.

Sunday night will be Game 4 of the World Series with the Cardinals sending Lance Lynn to the mound where he will hopefully have a good outing.  Lynn is another one of those pitchers who either is really good or really bad with nothing in the middle.  He hasn’t shown an ability to handle pressure very well so hopefully holding him off until Game 4 will make things easier for him.  If not, it could be a long night for the Cardinals.

We’ll be back on Monday with a look back at this weekend’s sports action plus a look ahead to Game 5 of the World Series andMonday Night Football which features the St. Louis Rams.  Thanks as always for checking out this and all the other blogs on the site and don’t forget to follow me on Twitter at KDEBlog.
