A cast of nearly 40 vocal music students at Hannibal High School is preparing to present "Anything Goes," a Cole Porter Broadway musical that has had numerous revivals since it was written in 1934.
It will be performed at 7 p.m. Nov. 7, 8 and 9 in the HHS auditorium.
The HHS production will be based on the 1987 revival. Sara Kurz is the play director, with Kate Fuller serving as assistant director. They teach vocal music at HHS.
Tickets cost $8 and will be sold specific to Thursday, Friday or Saturday (Nov. 7, 8, or 9). They are available at the school office and in the auditorium on Tuesday and Thursday nights in October. The remaining tickets will be sold at the door on the play dates.
The musical introduced songs including "Anything Goes," "You're the Top" and "I Get a Kick Out of You."
The story takes place aboard an ocean liner, the SS American, bound from New York to London.
Billy Crocker is a stowaway, in love with heiress Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and Public Enemy No. 13 Moonface Martin aid Billy in his quest to win Hope.
HHS junior Jamey Lemon, who will portray Billy Crocker, is acting in his first high school play and also in the school choir for the first time.
His favorite song in the play is "It's Delovely," a duet with HHS junior Kaliea Griffen, who is portraying Hope Harcourt.
Griffen decided "It's Delovely" also is her favorite song in the musical.
Lemon encouraged the public to attend the play, explaining "people will really enjoy it." He recommended "Anything Goes" for "anyone who likes laughing and a good love story."
Griffen agreed that people will enjoy the play, because "It's an enjoyable story, and it's definitely funny."
Lemon is enjoying his musical part in the HHS play. After high school, he would like to continue his musical education, but perhaps not make it his career. "I am looking at somewhere in the medical field," he said.
Although Griffen is in rehearsal for her first lead in a play, she has been in musicals since seventh grade.
Her favorite role until now was Molly in "Annie Junior," when she was in middle school.
Griffen sees her future in music education, following the example of music teacher Mrs. Kurz. "She's always been a good role model," Griffen said.
