A parish center is being built at 218 S. Maple Ave. in Hannibal. The two-level structure will feature 5,400 square feet.
The parish offices will be housed in the new building. In addition there will be ample space for meetings and funeral luncheons.
There will be a kitchenette, restrooms and storage space for parish records on the lower level. The upper level will have a banquet room with seating for 100 people, a full kitchen and restrooms.
“They’ve been putting on the water-proof membrane. As they put that on they’ll back-fill right behind it and just keep working their way up until they get it all,” said Janice Rupp of Holy Family Church. “Any parts that are under ground will be water-proofed with a special membrane to keep the water out. We’ve got a really good drainage system so we don’t expect to have the slightest bit of problem with water. We really tried to address that because we have very old documents, old church records we have to protect. That’s why we took extra precautions to keep the water out.”
“I think they’ve got the framing up on the front wall of the downstairs,” said Rupp. “They’re going to continue the framing up on the second floor so they can get the roof trusses on.”
The projected cost of the construction project is $1,047,000.
The money necessary to pay for the center has already been pledged by church members. The pledges were made over the past year during the “Living our Faith, Building our Vision” fund-raising campaign.
Projected date for completion
It is hoped that the new parish center will be ready for use by early 2014.
