The Hannibal boys’ soccer team ran its season-opening winning streak to four straight Thursday night when the Pirates beat Boonville 3-1 on the road.

“It was good to get the win,” Hannibal coach Eric Hill said. “It was another conference win on the road. We now have two of our longer conferecnce trips out of the way and we were able to come away with road victories in both of those which is always tough to do.”

Boonville scored first, finding the back of Hannibal’s net in the 20th minute, but did not hold the lead long.

“We honeslty weren’t playing very well early at all,” Hill said.

Hannibal tied the game at 1-1 in the 23rd minute when Trever Hertlein scored on a header with the assist coming from Tyler Thomure. Thomure made the pass to Hertlein on a throw in.

Hill said Hertlein’s goal got the team going.

Four minutes later, Thomure gave Hannibal the lead when he beat Boonville’s defenders in a sprint and scored an unassisted goal.

“He just beat his defenders,” Hill said. “He beat an outside midfielder, then a center midfielder, and then a defender and another defender. ... He got the ball a little deaper than mid field and just took it down the sidelines. He kind of turned on the afterburners and beat several people. He got down to the goal and kind of just swatted a goal right underneath (Boonville’s) goal keeper.”

That was it for first half scoring as Hannibal took a 2-1 lead into the break.

Three minutes into the second half, the Pirates scored the games final goal when Jack Baumann scored off an assist from Dashon McBride.

“Tonight’s game wasn’t the best,” Hill said. “We didn’t play as well as we could. We honestly left some goals out there.”

With the win, Hannibal improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in North Central Missouri Conference play.

Hannibal will be back on its home field tonight as the Pirates host their annual tournament. Hannibal will play Southeast High out of Springfield tonight at the Veterans Field Sports Complex. Play begins at 6 p.m.
