  • Every time that Gene Mundle of Hannibal looks at the potato he dug up earlier this week, it cracks him up. Or maybe to be more accurate, it “quacks” him up.
Why? Because it doesn’t take much imagination to look at the approximately 3.5-inch tall potato and see the shape of a duck.
“It looks funny ... like a little duck,” said Mundle, who lives on the city’s South Side.
The duck-shaped spud was one of two or three potatoes that were set aside by Mundle because of their odd shape. But the duck-shaped potato is his favorite.
“It’s the talk of the town,” said Mundle, who has been showing it to friends and family. “They recognize what it looks like.”
Don’t look for the odd-shaped potato to be a featured guest at an upcoming Mundle meal.
“I have plenty of potatoes to eat,” he said. “I’ll probably keep this one until it dries up. It’s a conversation piece.”
Sometimes Mundle starts the conversation with a joke.
“Does anyone want ‘quackers’ with their potatoes?” he asked with a chuckle.
It all depends, will the cost be added to the “bill?”
