Doris I. McCarter Loveless Heslar Hedrick, 97, of Pittsfield, Ill., formerly of Hannibal, Mo., passed away at 1 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2013, at the Pittsfield Manor in Pittsfield, Ill.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal, Mo. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hedrick was born on her family's farm in rural Pike County, Ill., on February 20, 1916, to James Kennedy and Verna Ellice Spencer McCarter.
She was married to George E. Loveless on December 23, 1940. He preceded her in death on December 29, 1973. Doris later married Rev. George W. Heslar on August 21, 1977. He preceded her in death on August 20, 1980. On August 21, 1982, she married L.B. "Gus" Hedrick. He preceded her in death on March 3, 2001.
Loving family members include her nephew, Jim Smith, who preceded her in death. Even though Doris had no children of her own, she considered Jim her son and his wife, Reta, her daughter. Reta Smith of Pittsfield, Ill., survives. Also surviving are Jim and Reta's daughters, who were like granddaughters to Doris, Lila Kattelman (Greg) of Pittsfield, Ill., and Lori DeVine (Mike) of Quincy, Ill. Other survivors include great-grandchildren, Michael James "Jamie" DeVine, Nicholas DeVine, Allison Kattelman, and Kennedy Kattelman.
Doris was a 1934 graduate of Hannibal High School and later graduated from Hannibal-LaGrange Junior College and attended summer classes at Kirksville State Teachers College. In 1953 she graduated from Culver-Stockton College with a Bachelor's of Science degree.
Doris began her lifelong career in education at a school in Griggsville, Ill. She later accepted a position at Stowell School in Hannibal, Mo. She retired from Stowell School in 1976 after teaching 35 and a half years. Doris enjoyed flowers, bowling, and attending senior dances in Hannibal and Quincy. She held membership in many professional clubs and organizations including the Business and Professional Women's Club. Doris was also a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Hannibal, Mo., where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Pallbearers will be Greg Kattelman, Mike DeVine, Michael James DeVine, Nicholas DeVine and Kennedy Kattelman.
Honorary pallbearer will be Allison Kattelman.
Memorials may be made to the Max Zumwalt Scholarship, in care of the James O'Donnell Funeral Home.
