  • Just as motorists were getting comfortable with their commute into Hannibal, MoDOT and its contractor will begin the final phase of resurfacing on Missouri 79 next week just south of Hannibal. At approximately 8 a.m., Monday, Sept. 9, work will begin on second phase of the two-phase project from Continental Cement to Route T/Fulton Avenue near A.D. Stowell School.
During this phase of the project, traffic will be two-way on the three-lane section from Fulton Avenue to just north of Mark Twain Cave; the remaining section of Missouri 79 from just north of the entrances to Mark Twain Cave and Campground, and Sawyer's Creek will be one lane controlled by a timed signal. This week, crews will install signs and other traffic control devices so they will be in place before Monday morning’s traffic. There will be a 10-foot width restriction in the work zone and a reduced speed limit of 35 m.p.h.
    Delays should be expected.
Access to tourist attractions such as Lovers Leap, Mark Twain Cave and Campground, and Sawyer's Creek will remain open to the public. Work should be completed by late early October.
