  • Golden Corral employees enjoy the public, praise their ‘boss’

  • The staff at Golden Corral - managers and newer employees alike - said they enjoy meeting their customers, and several described owner Steve Shaw as “the best boss.”
    “Steve is the best owner I’ve ever worked for, and everybody will tell you that,” said manager Frank Rose, who has been at Golden Corral in Hannibal for seven years. “Everybody is friendly, and it is a great place to work,” he added.
    Ordering the food is among Rose’s duties. The most challenging part of his job is “keeping up with the different menu changes,” he said.
    “I order all the food, and every three months we have a new promotion. It gets hectic, but it’s part of it. You’ve got to keep changing and keep it fresh.” The current promotion is prime rib dinners on weekends, which is continuing this weekend and the first weekend in September.
    The Golden Corral building at 3913 McMasters’ Ave. also is undergoing a change, as cultured stone is added to the exterior. Ben Dickerson, who has been doing the work, reported it has taken him almost a month and is nearly finished.
    Why did Shaw decide to change the appearance of his restaurant? Dickerson explained, “the building was built in the ‘80s and is dated.” Adding cultured stone “is what most (large restaurants) are doing now,” he said. “It makes it look like a new building.”
    Shaw said he wanted to thank Dickerson. “He did a good job.”
    The women managers also had praise for Shaw, such as Loretta Schwalb, who declared, “he is the best boss you can work for.”
    Schwalb has been with Golden Corral for 10 years but took time off for the birth of her daughter, Gabby, who is almost 6 years old. She explained that “not too many (bosses) will work around your schedule.”
    She would advise anyone seeking a restaurant job to apply, because “the food is good, and the staff is friendly. ... We all work together.”
    Manager Theresa Sherfy, who also has been there 10 years, said “it is a really good environment. I love everybody I work with and enjoy being around all the customers.”
    Brett Gibbons, a dishwasher, has stayed with Golden Corral for the past seven years, because he likes the people with whom he works.
    Shaw “is there for everybody,” said manager Stephanie Crabill, who has been with Golden Corral for the past 10 years.
    “He is caring, giving and awesome,” Crabill added. “He goes way above and beyond anybody’s expectations. Steve is there if you need him - at 2, 3 or 4 in the morning, he will be there.”
    Page 2 of 2 - Manager Jason Holmes is enjoying his seventh year with Golden Corral, explaining, “it’s a fast pace and you are always busy. ... If you want to stand around, it is not the place for you.”
    Jason Roth, another manager, has been working for Shaw for about eight years, part of which was at his Saints Avenue Cafe in Bowling Green before he returned to Hannibal.
    Roth reported his job is enjoyable 99 percent of the time, adding, “Steve is a great boss. I couldn’t really ask for a better employer.”
