Robert E. Nelson, 74, of Petty Plain Road died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass.
He was born in Hannibal, Mo., on Jan. 23, 1939, the son of Ernest L. and Velma (Bingham) Nelson. Robert attended local schools in Hannibal and was a graduate of McCooey High School Class of 1959.
Robert served in the U.S. Navy for six years and then served in the U.S. Army for 10 years, serving 30 months in Vietnam. He was awarded the Silver Star, five Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters, and two Purple Hearts.
Robert was an insurance technician at the Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance for many years.
Besides his wife, the former Mary Millett, Robert leaves his daughter, Amy Christal and her husband Virgel of Hannibal, Mo., two brothers, Carl Wayne Nelson and his wife Rosie of Hannibal, Mo., and Charles Leroy Nelson of Quincy, Ill., four grandchildren, Emily Dryden, Travis, Joshua and Nicholas Christal, two great-grandchildren, Adisynn and Aynslee, and an aunt, Gertrude Boltinghouse and her husband Harold of Hannibal, Mo. He also leaves sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours.
Funeral services will be private. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
