  • Danny Charlton Jr. of Hannibal is convinced he saw a body in the Mississippi River. But a search Wednesday morning of an island approximately 3.5 miles north of the Hannibal marina proved fruitless.
“Nothing was found,” said Lt. Erik Gottman of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. “The reporting party led the Fire Department up there. When we got up to the scene a little bit later the Fire Department had walked the island along with the reporting party and nothing was found.”
    Charlton spotted something Sunday afternoon.
“What I saw was a tarp. I pulled up on the bank and it seemed like there was a shirt and an arm bone hanging out of the shirt. I’m thinking it was a body,” he said.
Charlton decided to report what he’d seen Wednesday morning.
“I’ve been struggling with it and having nightmares about it,” he said. “I figured the best thing to do was get a hold of the local authorities and let them know, just in case it was somebody’s loved one.”
Gottman said another officer may make a follow-up sweep of the area during the upcoming weekend.
“We may send him up there to get out and look around a little bit more, but at this point there’s just nothing there to really go by,” he said.
