  • The new playground equipment installed at Kiwanis Park near the Hannibal riverfront was crowded with children and youth climbing on the various items Thursday evening, and they were too busy to notice the grand opening ceremony that was taking place nearby.
This ceremony at 6:30 p.m. followed the 6 p.m. grand opening of the new playground at Willow Street Park, at 404 Willow St.
At Kiwanis Park, Hannibal Parks & Recreation Director Andrew Dorian reported a new picnic shelter as large as the one in Huckleberry Park will be added in spring of 2014, and he expects Kiwanis Park to become more popular for large gatherings.
Also participating in the ceremony at Kiwanis Park were Mayor Roy Hark and Tom and Becky (John Fowler and Emilee Carleton).
Earlier Tom and Becky were joining the many youth trying their climbing skills on the challenging pieces of playground equipment.
Among the children trying out their skills were Kamarrha Minor, Preston Schanbacher, Elizabeth Johnston, Ashton Neagles, Adisyn Schanbacher, Will Johnston and T.J. Lain.
For photos of these and other children, see the Seen on Scene photo gallery of Kiwanis Park grand opening.
